Limestone Floor Restoration in Hampshire – Specialist Case Study
Restoring limestone bathrooms aboard the Queen Mary 2
Natural limestone floors are a significant investment, prized for their character, softness and timeless appeal. However, without specialist care, limestone is vulnerable to staining, etching, salt damage and surface breakdown.
This case study demonstrates our expertise in advanced limestone and marble restoration, drawing on experience gained from one of the world’s most prestigious environments – Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, alongside our everyday work restoring limestone floors throughout Hampshire homes and commercial properties.
Background: Advanced Limestone Deterioration in High-Moisture Environments
Following the successful completion of specialist stone restoration contracts aboard P&O Britannia and Cunard Queen Elizabeth, we were commissioned to survey and restore limestone and marble surfaces within Queen Mary 2’s most luxurious suites.
The stonework had suffered from long-term deterioration, particularly within bathroom environments where moisture exposure is unavoidable. After a full assessment, the primary causes were identified as:
- Mineral staining embedded deep within the stone
- Salt spalling, caused by moisture migration through unsealed or poorly protected limestone
- Surface erosion creating sharp edges and safety concerns
Salt spalling occurs when moisture enters porous natural stone, dispersing salts internally. Over time, these salts crystallise within weak areas of the stone, creating internal pressure that leads to crumbling and surface failure. Once established, this process cannot be fully reversed — but with correct intervention it can be stabilised, slowed and safely managed.
This same mechanism is frequently encountered in Hampshire properties, particularly:
Older homes
Ground floors
Bathrooms and kitchens
Coastal locations such as Southampton, Portsmouth and the Solent region
Project Objective: Safety, Stability & Conservation
Cunard required the stone surfaces to be:
- Made safe for guest use
- Visually sympathetic to the original design
- Repaired without unnecessary replacement
- Completed within strict operational timeframes
As the stone was too advanced for cosmetic renewal, a
conservation-led restoration approach was adopted — the same methodology we now apply to heritage and high-value limestone floors across Hampshire.

Our Specialist Limestone Restoration Process
1. Deep Cleaning & Salt Reduction
- Intensive alkaline cleaning to remove surface salts, contamination and ingrained soil
- Controlled rinsing to prevent driving moisture deeper into the stone
2. Structural Stabilisation
- Extensive hole and void filling to floors and walls
- Reinforcement of weakened stone areas to prevent further breakdown
3. Precision Grinding & Honing
- Diamond grinding and honing to blend filled areas seamlessly
- Correction of sharp edges and surface irregularities
- Restoration of a uniform, safe, slip-consistent finish
4. Mineral Stain Management
- Localised drilling and removal of deeply mineralised areas where stain removal was not technically viable
- Filling, re-honing and blending to surrounding stone
5. Breathable Sealing & Protection
- Application of impregnating sealers
- Protection without trapping moisture
- Long-term resistance to staining and further salt migration
All works were completed within schedule and prior to Queen Mary 2’s return to service.
Additional Stone Works Completed
In addition to limestone and marble floors and walls, we also restored:
- Fantasy Granite vanity units
- Black Granite vanity units
Mechanical polishing to restore clarity and depth
Sealing to protect against water ingress and cosmetic damage
Suites & Areas Restored
Works were carried out across:
- Balmoral Duplex
- Windsor Suite
- Holyrood Suite
- Buckingham Suite
- Sandringham Duplex

The project was undertaken by Richard and Michelle, supported by Eddie of Mr Bit Carpet Cleaning (Coventry), who also assisted during previous Cunard and P&O contracts.
Applying Marine-Grade Expertise to Hampshire Limestone Floors
The same technical principles used aboard Queen Mary 2 are now applied to limestone and travertine floors throughout Hampshire, including:
- Winchester
- Southampton
- Portsmouth
- Basingstoke
- Petersfield
- Fareham
- Alresford
- The New Forest
- Coastal and inland properties
Our Hampshire Limestone Services Include:
