Marmoleum Floor Restoration Project – Isle of Wight
Cleaned, Resurfaced & Sealed with Dr Schutz PU Hardened Matt Finish

At Hampshire Hard Floor Care, we were recently called to the Isle of Wight to restore a heavily worn Marmoleum floor that had become discoloured, scratched, and uneven in appearance.
This project highlights how professional restoration can bring a floor back to life—without the cost or disruption of replacement.
What is Marmoleum?
Marmoleum is a high-quality, natural flooring product, often mistaken for vinyl but very different in both composition and performance.
It is manufactured using:
Linseed oil
Wood flour
Limestone
Natural resins
A jute backing
This makes it:
Environmentally friendly
Naturally antibacterial
Extremely durable
Popular in homes, kitchens, schools, and healthcare environments
However, despite its durability, Marmoleum is still a surface finish—and over time it will show signs of wear if not properly maintained.

The Problem – Scratched, Yellowed & Worn Surface
On this Isle of Wight project, the floor had deteriorated significantly over time, showing:
Heavy surface scratching across large areas
A dull, lifeless appearance
Noticeable yellowing discolouration
Patchy wear patterns where previous coatings had broken down
Embedded dirt sitting within the worn surface
The scratching was particularly noticeable in natural light, with light reflecting unevenly across the floor, highlighting the extent of wear.
Although the damage looked severe, it was largely surface-level, meaning the floor was an ideal candidate for professional restoration.
Our Professional Restoration Process
1. Deep Cleaning & Decontamination
We began with a thorough deep clean to:
Remove ingrained dirt and contaminants
Strip back failing surface residues
Prepare the floor for resurfacing
2. Mechanical Resurfacing
This is the key stage for heavily worn Marmoleum.
Using specialist equipment, we:
Reduced surface scratching
Smoothed out uneven wear patterns
Blended areas of discolouration
Created a uniform, consistent surface
This step dramatically improved the overall appearance before any coatings were applied.
3. Application of Dr Schutz PU Sealer (Matt Finish)
To protect and enhance the floor, we applied a Dr Schutz PU Hardened Sealer in a matt finish.
This premium system:
Forms a durable, hard-wearing protective layer
Improves resistance to future scratching
Creates a natural, modern matt appearance
Makes ongoing cleaning far easier
The Result
The finished floor was transformed:
Scratches significantly reduced and blended out
Yellowing and discolouration greatly improved
A clean, even, uniform finish throughout
A tough, protective coating now in place
The floor now looks fresh, modern, and consistent—without losing its original character.
Why Restore Instead of Replace?
Even heavily scratched Marmoleum floors can often be restored.
Benefits include:
Far more cost-effective than replacement
No disruption of removing and refitting flooring
Environmentally responsible
Extends the life of the floor for years
