Bring Back the Natural Beauty of Your Travertine Floors
Travertine is a naturally porous stone. Without proper care, dirt, grime, and spills can seep into the pores, leading to staining, dullness, and even long-term damage. DIY cleaning often isn’t enough and can sometimes cause further harm if the wrong products or techniques are used.

Richard and Michelle at Hampshire Hard Floor Care specialise in cleaning, restoring, and protecting Travertine floors to keep them looking pristine.

Richard and Michelle understand the unique needs of Travertine. With advanced equipment and specialist stone-care products, they can safely deep-clean and restore your floors while protecting their natural character and beauty. Staining and Acid damage (etching) is common on this stone, more info can be found here.
Our cleaning method is safe for all types of natural and man-made stone surfaces, including Travertine. We use specialist pH-balanced products and controlled cleaning techniques that gently lift out dirt, grime, and residues without harming the stone.
Unlike harsh pressure washing or acidic cleaning, our approach preserves the natural integrity and finish of your stone, ensuring no etching, dulling, or erosion occurs. Each floor is assessed individually, allowing us to adjust our tools, brushes, and cleaning solutions to suit the specific stone type, finish, and level of soiling.
Our Travertine Cleaning and Restoration Services for Hampshire
List of Services

Deep Cleaning of TravertineItem Link List Item 1
At Hampshire Hard Floor Care, our Travertine cleaning process gently deep cleans and restores your stone without damage. We begin by protecting surrounding areas, then remove dry soil before applying specialist alkaline or stone-safe cleaning solutions designed specifically for Travertine. Using low-speed rotary or planetary machines, we loosen and extract ingrained dirt while controlling moisture to avoid over-wetting or etching. Once dry, we apply a professional impregnating sealer to help repel water and oils, before finishing with a soft buff for an even, natural look. The result is beautifully clean, refreshed Travertine that retains its natural warmth and texture
-
Honing and Polishing of TravertineItem Link List Item 2
we restore worn or dull Travertine floors through a precise diamond honing and polishing process. After deep cleaning and preparation, we work through multiple grades of diamond abrasives, starting with coarser grits to remove scratches, etching, imperfections and surface wear, then gradually refining the surface to close the pores and develop a smooth, even sheen. Each stage is carefully cleaned between grit changes to prevent contamination and ensure a uniform finish. The level of honed/polished — from matte/satin to high gloss — is tailored to your preference and the stone’s natural characteristics.
-
Etch and Stain RemovalItem Link List Item 3
We treat stains and etching on Travertine, marble, and other natural stones using specialist restoration techniques rather than harsh chemicals. First, we identify whether the mark is a surface etch (acid damage) or a sub-surface stain. Etches are corrected by light honing or micro-polishing with fine diamond abrasives to re-level the surface and restore clarity. For stains, we apply targeted poultices or drawing agents that safely pull the contamination out of the stone’s pores. Once the affected area is neutralised and dry, we blend the finish back in with the surrounding surface and apply a penetrating sealer to help prevent future marking.rite a description for this list item and include information that will interest site visitors. Sealing and ProtectionItem Link List Item 4
After cleaning or restoration, we apply premium-quality penetrating sealers to protect your floors from future staining and make everyday maintenance easier.
We apply either a solvent or water based professional sealer which seals both stone and grout:
- Has deep penetration into the stone structure
- Oil and water repellence
- No film build-up
- Long-term protection with easy maintenance
We do not use the cheaper alternative for Travertine which is called Stone Soap and is more of a Maintenance Treatment, Not a True Sealer. It relies on continual application to maintain repellency, also this product does not repel oil which is essential in Kitchen environments.

Alternative Treatments and FinishesItem Link
While most modern Travertine floors are protected using penetrating impregnating sealers, there are also a couple of alternative finishes that can alter the appearance or feel of the stone:
- Wax Finish: Ideal to create prestigious floors: enhances the beauty of the surface, wax creates a soft sheen and richer tone,3-in-one solution: protects, maintains and gives floors an excellent finish.
- Stone Soap Finish: Used mainly in historic buildings, these treatments enhance colour and create a natural patina but offer limited stain resistance and require regular top-up maintenance.
-
Crack Repair and Hole fillingItem Link
We can repair and fill small holes, chips, and cracks in your Travertine floors to restore their visual continuity. Using high-quality resin-based fillers, we carefully colour-match each repair to the surrounding stone so it blends naturally once honed and sealed. These materials are designed to bond securely within the stone, helping prevent further deterioration or soil accumulation. This process is often carried out prior to honing or polishing, ensuring a smooth, even surface and a flawless final finish. Whether caused by wear, impact, or natural pitting, our restoration methods return your Travertine to a clean, consistent appearance while maintaining its natural character.
-
Periodic MaintenanceItem Link
Regular maintenance is essential to keep your Travertine floors looking their best and to extend the life of the protective sealer. We recommend routine vacuuming or dry dust mopping to remove grit that can scratch the surface, followed by damp mopping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner — never acidic or bleach-based products. Spills should be wiped up promptly to prevent staining or etching. Over time, all sealed stone benefits from a professional maintenance clean and reseal, and we offer this as part of our ongoing care service. Our maintenance visits help refresh the protective layer, restore natural clarity and texture, and ensure your Travertine continues to look beautifully clean and well cared for all year round.
