Marble Restoration Service
We restore marble floors, vanity units and worktops/Islands
Marble is a calcium-based natural stone prized for its depth, veining and elegance. However, its relatively soft and porous structure makes it vulnerable to surface wear, scratching, etching from acids, staining and loss of clarity over time. Incorrect cleaning methods, harsh chemicals and topical sealers often accelerate this deterioration.
At Hampshire Hard Floor Care, we provide professional marble restoration services using industry-approved mechanical processes and stone-safe chemistry to restore marble floors and surfaces while preserving their original character.
Understanding Marble Deterioration
Marble damage is rarely superficial. Common issues include:
- Acid etching – chemical reaction from acidic substances (wine, citrus, bathroom products) dissolving calcium carbonate and leaving dull, rough patches
- Surface abrasion – micro-scratching caused by foot traffic, grit and incorrect cleaning pads
- Loss of reflectivity – breakdown of the stone’s crystalline structure
- Embedded staining – oils and contaminants penetrating open pores
- Lippage and uneven tiles – natural movement or installation tolerances becoming more visible over time
These problems cannot be resolved with simple cleaning or polishing compounds — mechanical restoration is required.
Our Technical Marble Restoration Process
1. Detailed Assessment & Testing
Every marble restoration begins with a technical inspection to identify:
- Marble type and density
- Existing sealers or coatings
- Depth of scratches, etching and wear
- Structural condition of the stone and grout
- Desired final finish (honed, satin or high polish)
Where necessary, test areas are carried out to confirm achievable results before full restoration.
2. Deep Cleaning & Residue Removal
Marble is first cleaned using pH-neutral, non-reactive stone detergents combined with mechanical agitation. This removes:
- Embedded soils and oils
- Previous maintenance residues
- Detergent films and surface contamination
This step ensures no contaminants interfere with the restoration process.
3. Diamond Grinding & Honing
For etched, scratched or uneven marble, we use progressive diamond abrasives to mechanically refine the surface.
This stage may include:
- Removal of etching and surface damage
- Scratch reduction or elimination
- Levelling minor lippage between tiles
- Closing and refining the stone’s pore structure
Grit selection is tailored to the stone condition, typically ranging from coarse metal-bond diamonds through to fine resin-bond honing pads.
4. Marble Polishing & Refinement
Once the surface is flat and refined, we polish using fine diamond abrasives and crystallisation-free techniques, restoring clarity and reflectivity without damaging the stone.
Finishes available include:
- Honed (matt / satin)
- Low sheen
- High gloss polish
This process enhances the marble’s natural veining and depth while maintaining a breathable surface.
5. Etch, Stain & Spot Repairs
Localised damage such as acid etching, water marks or staining is treated using targeted reduction techniques. Repairs are blended seamlessly into surrounding areas to avoid patchiness.
6. Crack, Chip & Joint Repairs
Where required, cracks and chips are repaired using colour-matched stone resins. Repairs are mechanically smoothed and polished to integrate fully with the surrounding marble, preventing further ingress of dirt or moisture.
7. Sealing & Anti-Etch Protection
Following restoration, we apply premium impregnating sealers that penetrate the stone without altering appearance. These sealers:
- Reduce liquid absorption
- Slow down staining
- Make ongoing maintenance easier
For kitchens, bathrooms and high-risk areas, we can also apply advanced anti-etch treatments, creating an invisible sacrificial barrier that protects against acidic damage while retaining a natural marble finish.
